Dr. David J. Sumanth - Dr. ProductivityDr. David J. Sumanth is Professor and Founding Director (since 1979) of the Productivity Research Group at the University of Miami. In 1979, he introduced "Productivity Engineering" as a Master's concentration in Industrial Engineering at the University of Miami, making it the first U.S. university to offer such a program.

He founded the International Conference series on Productivity & Quality Research, and chaired the first five conferences from 1987 to 1995. He also founded the International Society for Productivity and Quality Research in 1993, and serves as Chairman of its board Also, he is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Productivity & Quality Research, which he also founded in 1995.

Dr Sumanth's book, Productivity Engineering and Management, published by McGraw-Hill (New York, 1984; Singapore,1985; Mexico, 1990; India, 1990, New York, 1994) has become a "classic", having influenced "productivity engineering" thinking in 25 countries, and has helped initiate new courses on the subject. He is the author/co-author/editor of 20 books, monographs, and video courses, and more than 100 publications. His research is focused on his "Total Productivity Management", Engineering Management, Quality, Competitiveness, Reengineering, Measurement and Improvement of Excellence, and Continuous Improvement approaches, including TQM, Benchmarking, Quality Deployment, and Problem-Solving Tools. For 31 years he has advised many prestigious organizations around the world.

He is a senior member of the (American) Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), the past Presidentand the mid-past Director (Miami Chapter). He is also a Charter Member of the American Society for Engineering Management. A member of the Institute of Management Sciences, and a past member of the Operations Research Society of America, and American Association for the Advancement of Science Since 1984, he served as Assistant Director of Productivity Management and Chairman for Research in the Management Division of IIE; he also served on the special Productivity Committee of IIE. Under his leadership, the University of Miami became one of the five Founding Members of the Sterling Council which administers Governor's Florida Sterling Award for Quality and Productivity. As the Governor's appointee, he has served as a Judge and Senior Judge for this award since its inception in 1992.

Dr. David J. Sumanth has a B.E. (Mech.Engineering) and an M.E. (Production Engineering) degrees from Osmania University, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. degrees in Industrial Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago. He is a frequent national and international speaker in the U.S.A., Europe, the Far East, and Latin America, and is the recipient of more than 60 honors, recognitions, and awards including the YMCA (Educational Achievement Gold Medal (1969), Outstanding Industrial Engineer of the Year Award (1983,1984), George Washington Honor Medal for Excellence in Economic Education (1987), and Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science (1989) for his contributions to Productivity Education. His biographical listings include: World researchers of the 1980's, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Men of Achievement, Community Leaders of America, Community leader of America. Directory of Distinguished Americans, Two Thousand Notable American Men, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Intentional Who's Who of Contemporary Achievement, International Leaders in Achievement, and 5000 Personalities of the World. His most recent honor is the Alexander Orr Award for Excellent in Teaching from University of Miami, FL U.S.A.

Most importantly, he likes to motivate, encourage, and "Build People Up" , for "We all have the same color of blood!"
