A Step Beyond Total Quality Management
by Dr. David J. Sumanth

WHY

If your organization is a monopoly, you may be very profitable now, but in an increasing competitive environment, will you have sufficient "Profit safety cushion"? If you are already in an oligopoly market, with domestic and/or international competition, are you merely developing strategies to survive, or are you aggressively capturing additional market share?

When times are tough, the most common strategies used by enterprises include:

  • Employment freezes
  • Layoffs
  • Early retirement plans
  • Price increases to cover expenses
  • Reduced employee training
  • Reduced Research & Development effort
  • All the above are " reactive" strategies that have significant negative effects in the short-term as well as the long-
  • term, ranging from inconsistent competitiveness, adversarial management-employee relation, low morale and lower profits, to severe social problems.

WHAT

Total Productivity Management (TPmgt™) is a proactive , pragmatic , innovative and unique concept, management philosophy, and systematic process, based on the industrial engineering and behavioral sciences. Because of its systemic nature, the TPmgt™ is truly "total", both conceptually and analytically. It emphasized the explicit relationship brtween quality and total productivity. Quality and total productivity are considered the two performance sides of the same coin, or two performing rails of the same track. They are inseparable conceptually and quantitatively, the concept is generic; therefore, it is easily adapted to any type of organization or enterprise, as has been demonstrated during the last 10 years in many countries around the world.

TESTIMONIAL

In 1981, Dr. David J. Sumanth worked with American Bankers Insurance Group to establish our Productivity Quality Teams…

The PQ Teams were very well received by the employees. Many excellent ideas were generated, from automation issues to customer service improvements…

Dr. Sumanth helped install a Total Productivity Management Report , which is still in use today. It addresses the relationship between Premium Income and all Expenses by processing, and total company. The report help to pinpoint specific expense trends that are inconsistent or undesirable, highlighting where management attention is needed. This reporting structure provides management with overview reports that represent the big picture, and coordinate with the lower level production reports.

We feel that Dr. Suamanth has developed an excellent system, as many of the concepts are effectively working at ABIG today. These include the Total Productivity Measurement, lower level capture of all inputs and outputs on consistent reports, participative employees involvement sharing , and profit/loss monitoring. All of these together are used to meet the needs to meet the needs of the Stockholders, Customers, Employees, and Community. The concepts that Dr. Sumanth has incorporated in his program have met the most important test at ABIG----the test of time.
